Natalie-Anne Hall

Natalie-Anne Hall is a PhD student in the Department of Sociology who is researching how Leave supporters use Facebook to engage with political content.

Natalie-Anne's research focuses in particular on the often-neglected group of 'non-digital-natives', or those middle-aged and older users who have not grown up with the internet. Based on a novel mixed methodology that combined immersive observations with in-depth interviews, her doctoral research findings point to the importance of Facebook as a platform for reclaiming value and creating senses of empowerment. For the participants, this value and power centred on finding and sharing 'truth' and challenging dominant regimes of knowledge around Brexit and immigration. She is also working as a consultant researcher on the AHRC-funded project Reframing Russia, which investigates the international audiences of Russian broadcaster RT and the importance of online media to its reception.
