Robot technology supports staff at Salford Royal NHS Foundation Trust

Salford Royal NHS Foundation Trust is utilising robot technology to support its ward staff in dispensing medication safely, quickly and efficiently.

PillTime is a complete dispensary unit featuring a robot and an optical checker. It gathers medication and dispenses it in sealed pouches according to patient and dosage. Each pouch is clearly labelled with patient and medication information to eliminate confusion and checked using image-recognition technology before being dispensed. After a successful trial in the Pendleton Suite at the Trust, it has been operating in the community facility at the Heartly Green Immediate Care Unit.

Nurse Nadine Keats, who works on the Pendleton Suite, said the project saved her 30-40 minutes in every round she completes.

“The PillTime pouches have made for an efficient drug rounds, a more calm and relaxed atmosphere on the ward, and also enabled tidier and more manageable trolleys,” she said.

“I would like to continue with the pouches rather than revert back to original pack dispensing.”

The Trust is currently finalising plans to roll PillTime out to a second community facility.
