An Exploration of Social Media Use By Dutch Development NGOs

Non-governmental organisations (NGOs) are active players in the field of international development, and make increasing use of social media.  Working with 14 Dutch NGOs which are actively using social media, this research asks, How do Dutch development NGOs perceive social media for their development projects?  Using a Glaserian grounded theory approach and selective coding, three main themes emerged:

- “NGO Enacting Values in Development” is about the organisation’s strategic intent in the context of international development.

- “NGO's Views on Social Media” encompasses the organisation’s view on the meaning of social media.

- “NGO’s Use of Social Media” represents the NGOs’ use of social media in the development context.

The nature of the relationship between these themes is theorised including application of affordances and a communication-for-development approach. 

The presentation will also share feedback received following presentation of these findings to international development practitioners.
